Capitolo I

Al mondo c'è una sola cosa peggiore del far parlare di sé ed è il non far parlare di sé.

Capitolo II

L'unico modo di liberarsi di una tentazione è cedervi. Resisti, e la tua anima si ammalerà del desiderio delle cose che si è proibite, di passione per ciò che le sue stesse mostruose leggi hanno reso mostruoso e illegale.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself, with desire for what its monstrous laws have made monstrous and unlawful.

La differenza tra un capriccio e una passione che dura una vita è che il capriccio dura un po' più a lungo. 

The only difference between a caprice and a lifelong passion is that the caprice lasts a little longer.

Solo le persone superficiali non giudicano dalle apparenze. Il vero mistero del mondo è il visibile, non l'invisibile.

It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.

La bellezza è una forma di genio − anzi, è più alta del genio, perché non richiede spiegazioni.

Beauty is a form of genius − is higher, indeed, than genius, as it needs no explanation.

I giovani vorrebbero essere fedeli e non lo sono; i vecchi vorrebbero essere infedeli e non possono: è tutto quello che se ne può dire.

Young men want to be faithful, and are not; old men want to be faithless, and cannot: that is all one can say.

Capitolo III

Gli esami non hanno alcun valore. Se uno è un gentiluomo, ne sa abbastanza; se non è un gentiluomo, qualsiasi cosa sappia è per lui un male. 

Examinations, sir, are pure humbug from beginning to end. If a man is a gentleman, he knows quite enough, and if he is not a gentleman, whatever he knows is bad for him.  

Oggigiorno i giovani s'immaginano che il denaro sia tutto, e quando invecchiano ne hanno la certezza.

Young people, nowadays, imagine that money is everything, and when they grow older, they know it.

L'umanità si prende troppo sul serio. È il peccato originale del mondo. Se l'uomo delle caverne fosse stato capace di ridere, la storia sarebbe stata diversa.

Humanity takes itself too seriously. It is the world's original sin. If the cavemen had known how to laugh, History would have been different.

Capitolo IV 

Oggi la gente conosce il prezzo di tutto e il valore di nulla.

Nowadays people know the price of everything, and the value of nothing.

Quando si è innamorati si comincia sempre con l'ingannare sé stessi, e si finisce con l'ingannare gli altri. Questo è ciò che il mondo chiama amore.

When one is in love, one always begins by deceiving one's self, and one always ends by deceiving others. That is what world calls a romance.

Gli uomini si sposano perché sono stanchi; le donne perché sono curiose: gli uni e gli altri restano sempre delusi.

Men marry because they are tired; women, because they are curious: both are disappointed.

La fedeltà corrisponde, nella vita emozionale, a quello che è la coerenza nella vita dell'intelletto —  semplicemente una confessione di fallimento.
