Se riesci a non perdere la testa
quando tutti intorno a te la perdono dandotene la colpa;
se riesci ad aver fiducia in te stesso quando tutti dubitano di te,
ma tenendo nel giusto conto anche il loro dubitare;
se riesci ad aspettare senza spazientirti nell'attesa,
o essendo calunniato, a non rispondere con calunnie,
o essendo odiato, a non farti prendere dall'odio,
pur non mostrandoti troppo buono, né parlando troppo da saggio;

se riesci a sognare - e non fare dei sogni i tuoi padroni;
se riesci a pensare - e non fare dei pensieri il tuo scopo,
se riesci ad affrontare il successo e la sconfitta
e a trattare questi due impostori allo stesso modo;
se riesci a sopportare di sentire la verità che hai pronunciato
distorta da furfanti che ne fanno una trappola per gli ingenui;
o vedere le cose per cui hai dato la vita, distrutte,
e chinarti a ricostruirle con i tuoi strumenti ormai logori;

Se riesci a fare un gruzzolo di tutte le tue vincite
e a rischiarle in un sol colpo a testa-o-croce,
e perdere e ricominciare tutto dal principio
e non dire mai una parola sulla tua perdita;
se riesci a costringere cuore, tendini e nervi
a servire ai tuoi scopi benché ormai sfiniti da tempo,
e a tener duro quando niente più resta in te
tranne la Volontà che dice loro: "Tieni duro!"

se riesci a parlare alle folle e conservare la tua virtù,
o a passeggiare con i Re e non perdere il tuo fare ordinario,
se né i nemici né gli amici più cari possono ferirti,
se tutti gli uomini per te contano, ma nessuno troppo;
se riesci a colmare l'inesorabile minuto
e a dar valore ad ognuno dei suoi sessanta secondi,
tua è la Terra e tutto ciò che è in essa,
e − quel che più conta − tu sarai un Uomo, figlio mio!
